More Information
William Makepeace Thackeray was born in Calcutta, India, in 1811.
He was sent to school in England at the age of five following the death of his
father, later to Trinity College Cambridge. Trained in law, though never
practised due to a lack of interest, he went into journalism and bought a
failing newspaper. He enjoyed some success as a novelist but it was 1847 and the
publication of Vanity Fair which secured his reputation, indeed one of the
finest novels in English Literature.
