Tove Jansson was born on 9th August 1914 in Helsinki, her parents
both being artists. She knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue the
arts and was educated accordingly eventually going to art school in Paris. She
soon found success with her paintings being regularly exhibited and was
acknowledged as a highly gifted artist. It was her books however that brought
her international success and fame. The 1950's saw tremendous popularity
extending to cartoon strips and later film and TV. Whilst she, quite rightly,
considers herself to be primarily an artist she will be best remembered for her
cartoon creations.
