Tobias Smollet has not been favoured memorably by the passage of
time, indeed all but forgotten in many quarters today. It is perhaps surprising
as he has influenced many writers, including a young Dickens. The chief
criticism seems to be his perceived 'coarseness', others however may consider
this to be a prime attribute.
