Thomas Mann was the greatest German novelist of the twentieth
century and one of the few to become internationally acclaimed. He was on 6th
June 1875 in Lubeck to a comfortable background. He began his working life in
publishing before trying a short lived stint in banking eventually turning his
efforts to writing. He met with immediate success with his first novel selling
over one million copies. Ever involved in political thinking Thomas Mann was on
holiday in Switzerland when he was warned it may not be safe to return to
Germany with the rise in power of Hitler. He remained in Switzerland for 5 years
during which time his books were burnt by the Nazis and he was stripped of his
citizenship. He never returned to Germany, spending some years in America before
returning to Switzerland were he remained until his death in 1955.
