Thomas Hardy was born on 2nd June 1840. He did well at school and was articled to become an architect which later took him to London. His first novel was turned down by publishers and the manuscript did not survive. His first published novel was far from a success not even selling the 500 copies initially. Far from the Madding Crowd secured his reputation and also some financial stability. Though difficult to imagine today most of the authors work was highly controversial at the time with many people taking serious offence, indeed the hostility to Jude the Obscure led him to to decision to write only poetry and prose in the future.
