ASHTON-WARNER, Sylvia , born 1908 to 1978, New Zealand novelist and memoirist. A teacher by profession, she worked to bridge the gap between Maori and white children. Spinster is her first and best novel: written in stream of consciousness style without any literary know-how, its naivety becomes moving

The story of her life  was developed for the big screen in the 1985 movie Sylvia, which revolved around her life story, work and writing
