Overview - Guide and Study

ASCH, Sholem , born 1880-1957, Polish-Jewish novelist and story-writer, who became an American in 1910 and is the most acclaimed modern Yiddish writer before 1. B. Singer, although not in his class. He was very prolific, and put plenty of true verve into his intelligent but sentimental stories. The Nazarene is a portrait of Christ which sold sensationally but is now hardly read. Altogether more readable is the portrait of New York, East River.
