More Information
Sapper was born in 1888 in Bodmin Cornwall and was the pseudonym
of Herman Cyril McNeile. He followed in the military tradition of his
family and fought in France for which he was mentioned in despatches and awarded
the Military Cross for bravery. The Use of the name Sapper came about because as
a serving officer he was unable to use his own name and being a member of the
Royal Engineers it seemed entirely appropriate. He achieved considerable success
even before the creation of his best known character Captain Hugh Drummond DSO
MC. It is difficult to overstate the popularity of the character, not only in
book form but also on the silver screen. The Ronald Coleman film in 1930 is said
to have netted the author $750,000 ! He is still keenly collected today and
copies of first editions in their superbly illustrated dust jackets are
particularly sought after.

Knowing he was terminally ill Sapper made arrangements for Gerald Fairlie to take over the series, Fairlie was his close friend for many years, indeed Bulldog Drummond is said to have been modelled on Fairlie.
