Rupert first appeared in a cartoon strip in the English newspaper The Daily Express and was a collaboration between his creator Mary Tourtel and her husband on 8th November 1920. Further episodes appeared for a couple of years before being published by Thomas Nelson. The best known, and most sought after, publications are the annuals which began in 1936, now illustrated by Alfred Bestall after Tourtel's retirement. The first one is highly collectable, especially so in its original dust jacket, so much so that even the facsimile editions published in 1985 command high prices. The Little Bears appeal still remains despite the passage of time, though popularity amongst readers is perhaps less than amongst collectors If you are interested in locating or selling related items then our find a rare bookseller section may be of some assistance.
