RP Jhabvala was born on 7th May 1927 in Cologne Germany to a
Polish/Jewish family. In 1938 they fled the country and settle din England. She
immediately began writing and read voraciously. At the age of 24 she met and
married an Indian architect and moved to India. The new surroundings and culture
provided not only inspiration but a rich tapestry of characters, settings and
ideas. She was soon regarded as one of the leading female authors of the time
and in 1975 won the Booker Prize with her best known novel Heat and Dust.
