RP Jhabvala was born on 7th May 1927 in Cologne Germany to a Polish/Jewish family. In 1938 they fled the country and settle din England. She immediately began writing and read voraciously. At the age of 24 she met and married an Indian architect and moved to India. The new surroundings and culture provided not only inspiration but a rich tapestry of characters, settings and ideas. She was soon regarded as one of the leading female authors of the time and in 1975 won the Booker Prize with her best known novel Heat and Dust.
