Rosemary Sutcliff was born in Surrey, England, in 1920 had a
transient childhood as her father was in the Navy, she was very ill as a child
with Still's Disease, the effects of which continued throughout her life.
Initially training to be a painter Sutcliffe soon realised her true love was
writing and in 1950 had her first book published. She wrote children's books and
historical novels and is probably best know for The Eagle of the Ninth. Her work
is collected and some of the early books can be difficult to find in collectible
condition.
