Radclyffe Hall was born on 12th August 1880 and her parents
separated shortly after she was born. Her American born mother showed little
interest in her and she was raised largely by her grandmother. On her fathers
death she inherited a great deal of money and began to live accordingly. She and
her partner Lady Una Troubridge became one of the most flamboyant and talked
about couples of the 1920's. Her reputation was already established when she
wrote The Well of Loneliness which was turned down by several publishers before
Cape published it only to withdraw it after a newspaper induced scandal broke
out surrounding the books content. The author became somewhat disillusioned and
further works failed to find previous success. In 1949 she passed away with, her
partner of 28 years, Una by her side. The Well was eventually reissued in the UK
in 1949 and has remained in print since.
