More Information
Penelope Fitzgerald was born in Lincoln, England, on 17th
December 1916 to a literary family. Her father was the editor of Punch
and her uncle was Ronald the author Knox. After leaving school she went to
Somerville College in Oxford where one of her tutors was JRR Tolkien, he left
with an honours degree in literature. A series of uninspiring jobs preceded the
publication of her first book. Her first novel The Golden Child started a run of
highly regarded and successful books. There have been several Booker nominations
with Offshore finally winning the coveted Booker Prize in 1979.
