Paul Scott was born in London on 25th March 1920. It is often
thought he spent his childhood in India, in fact he did not go there until he
was in his early twenties. The experience gave rise to the work he is best known
for, The Raj Quartet. He did enjoy some success before The Jewel in the Crown
was published. The book was well received by the critics but initially enjoyed
only modest commercial success. This all changed when a television adaptation
brought the book to a wider audience. The author won the Booker Prize in 1977
and with it the acclaim he deserved, sadly short lived as he passed away in 1978.
