Patrick O'Brian, along with CS Forester, are seen as the grandfathers of naval and maritime fiction. The main series character Luck Jack Aubrey and his physician Stephen Maturin have long been favourites with both readers and collectors. Recently there was a hugely successful film adaptation starring Russell Crowe in the role of Jack Aubrey. The books are very collectable, especially early titles.
