Ouida, real name Maria Louise Rame, was born in 1839 and died in
1908. She was a very popular writer and sold tremendous numbers of books, many
running to multiple reprints. She did not enjoy great critical acclaim, though
romance based novelists seldom do. The majority of her books were triple deckers
in their 1st edition state. Three volume sets are always difficult to obtain and
consequently of some value. Under Two Flags is the authors best known, and most
collectable work. Collectors will certainly have their work cut out trying to
get a full set of first editions, if indeed it is even possible today. Period
reprints may be the way ahead, there are some very attractive and reasonably
priced later impressions.
