Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool, England, on 22nd March
1910 the son of a distinguished surgeon. After leaving Cambridge with a law
degree he became a solicitor but soon became disillusioned and threw the job in
order to write. He moved to London and lived in a small bedsit whilst writing
articles for periodicals and magazines. His early novels were well received but
it was with his best known novel The Cruel Sea that met with real
commercial success which made him a wealthy man, though he did continue working
as a civil servant. Monsarrat passed away in 1979 whilst working on the second
volume of his masterpiece The Master Mariner.
