Nevil Shute Norway was born on 17th January 1899 to a well off
family. He was welll educated at private school before going to Balliol College,
Oxford. He began work in the aeronautical industry, though he already had
literary ambitions and began work on his first novel during his free time.
Though his first book was not a great financial success subsequent work went on
to become international best sellers. He is best known for On the Beach and A
Town Like Alice.
