ALGREN, Nelson (1909) American novelist, classed as a "Chicago realist". His earlier novels of Chicago's west-side slums had strong naturalist tendencies, and were influenced by Marxist thought. His finest work, The Man with the Golden Arm, about a drug addict, has greater psychological depth. Latterly he has written still vivid but more sentimental novels.
