Peter O'Donnell, born 1920 in London, England, was the creator of the highly successful character of ten referred to as the female James Bond. Modesty Blaise first appeared in a cartoon strip in London's Evening Standard newspaper Monday 13th May 1963, it ran for 5 months. O'Donnell also worked on other successful picture strip characters such as Garth and Romeo Brown. Such was the popularity of his heroine that a motion picture was made and released in 1966, widely regarded as a missed opportunity the author himself was disappointed by the casting and the film. To avoid any reoccurrence he purchased all the rights and so gained full control. It was around this time that the books began to appear, with great commercial success. Peter O'Donnell was was approached by Diana Rigg in the early seventies who wanted to bring the character to the small screen with herself playing Modesty Blaise. He was initially enthusiastic but the choice of leading man, Adam Faith later became a stumbling block. The books have been reprinted extensively and in different formats so are freely available, first editions for collectors are not so easy and are quite sought after by collectors.
