Mervyn Peake was born in China on 9th July 1911, his father being
a missionary doctor. On returning to England he went to Eltham College and was
considered to be a poor student except for art a subject at which he excelled,
later studying at the Royal Academy in London. His first novel, Titus Groan was
published with the assistance of Graham Greene
who was working as a reader at Eyre at the time and mad suggestions for changes
which once done led to its publication. Peake's work is perhaps regarded better
today than it was when published as many critics and readers were unable to
pigeon hole his style. Following a long illness the author died in 1968.
