ALEMAN,Mateo (1547-1614) Spanish novelist who established the picaresque novel with Guzmdn de Alfarache. This is vivid, moralizing (but probably only in order to deflect clerical ire) and vitally important in the history of the novel.

Primera parte de Guzmán de Alfarache
Mateo Aleman led a somewhat 'exciting' life, was sentenced to imprisionment twice for
for failure to clear personal loans and debt. It was not until he
reached the age of sixty that he finally found some peace in a move to Mexico. The
first instalment of his best known work, Guzmán de Alfarache, was
released in 1599 and the final part in 1604.
