Mary Norton was born in London on 10th December 1903 and enjoyed
a comfortable upbringing,. On leaving school she went to work in the theatre
before getting married and moving to Portugal. The war saw her move to America
with her children for safety and the need to earn money saw the first of the
short stories. The first books were slow to take off in the US but were met with
instant critical acclaim in the UK. The books have a timeless and classic feel,
the popularity has of course been increased by the Disney film and all first
editions are now collectable books. The author passes away at home in Devon in
1992.
