More Information
Mario Puzo, born 15 October 1920 and died 1999 was American born
and bred. The son of Italian immigrants who suffered the depression. He joined
the army at the onset of World War II, seeing it as a way out of impoverishment
and spent four years serving in Europe. He is known, most notably of course, for
The Godfather. The book has sold in excess of 20 million copies worldwide and
the subsequent films have been a phenomenon. The book took three years to
research and write and saved the author from his gambling induced financial
problems. The book is the most collectable title of his, American editions
precede their English counterparts in all cases and there are no alternative
titles. Later books were subject to huge print runs, added to that being
regarded as disappointing in quality, they are available for modest sums in 1st
edition status. The Godfather does remain a cornerstone title however, the
American edition being worth substantially more the the British. As so often
with modern firsts, near fine should be the minimum required condition.
