Lorna Hill , born Lorna Leatham, was born in Durham in 1902, well
educated at a Swiss finishing school before returning to go to university.
Marrying and later moving to a remote parish she began to write. Her first nine
books were all written in long hand just for her daughter Vicki who shared them
with her friends. A chance visiting publishers reader spotted the books and
recommended them for publication. Despite some initial problems with her first
publisher the Marjorie series soon became a children's favourite and Hill
expanded to other characters. She was also a shrewd businesswoman securing
publishing terms with greater earnings than many of her contemporaries.
The books are collected today with some being somewhat tricky to acquire in
collectible condition. Lorna Hill passed away in 1991 just short of her 90th
birthday .
