More Information
Kenneth Graham was born in Scotland on 8th March 1859. His mother
died young, from scarlet fever which also affected Grahame who very nearly died
and was dogged with ill health throughout his life as a result. His initial
success with Golden Age and Dream Days was considerable and whilst it may be
surprising today, Wind in the Willows did not meet with the same immediate
success. Today is regarded as one of the most important children's books of all
time. The original edition was not illustrated, bar the frontis. In 1913 Paul
Bransom provided drawings for a new edition, as did Nancy Barnhart in 1922 and
Wyndham Payne in 1927. It was in 1931 that Ernest Shepherd took on the
commission for the most famous illustrated edition, and in doing so shaped the
characters in the image we all know today.
