More Information
Kay Thompson, died in 1998 but her year of birth is unclear and
appears to have been 'adjusted' during the authors lifetime. Born and raised in
America she was all set for a career on the stage working in musicals. When the
first book was published in 1955 it was a huge success, selling 4,000
copies a week. All of the books were illustrated by Hilary Knight and are
responsible in a large part for their success. The authors death saw a lifting
of her ban on republishing her work and the whole series was republished with
some minor changes to bring them up to date. The first editions are sought after
by collectors. In all cases, the US edition precedes the English. Unusually,
values seem to be roughly the same for both editions. Presumably due to smaller
UK print runs, the greater rarity off setting the increased popularity of the
character in America.( Thomson )
