More Information
Joyce Cary, born 1888 and died 1957 was an Irish novelist who was
in the army until his failing health forced him to leave. Therefore his career
began later than most, his first book not being published until he was 44. His
health problems left him permanently invalided. Perhaps his greatest talent was
for creating deep and believable characters. This was no accident as he produced
huge documents for each character. His best known book is probably The Horse's
Mouth, an excellent piece of work but helped in popularity, no doubt, by the
film adaptation starring Alec Guinness. In all but one case, English editions
precede their American counterparts and are more collectable. Nice jacketed 1st
editions of the pre 1941 titles are not easy to find. That said, apart from the
first two books and the above mentioned title they are not prohibitively
expensive.
