Joseph Heller, born 1923 and died 1999, was responsible for one
of the best known American novels ever written, and also one of the most
collectable modern first editions. His commentary in the anti-war book, based on
his own military experiences, is simply a superb example of black-comedy. Even
the books title gave us a new phrase, the meaning of which is now universally
known. It was also the basis of a successful big screen adaptation. For
collectors, once you have the first book the rest is relatively easy, there are
issue points that you should be aware of and anything not first issue
drops hugely in value. There have also been several signed limited editions
issued for several of the titles, some being contemporaneous others years after.
American editions precede their English counterparts and are also of greater
value, due largely to greater American interest in the writer. Overall an
important and very collectable author.
