Joseph Conrad, born 3 December 1857 in the Ukraine, real name
Josef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, till 1924. He led a very adventurous life in
his early years, being a gun runner, dueller and adventurer before calming down
a little and joining the merchant navy. He left the service in 1894 and began
writing. Success came eventually and he became a very popular author in his
time. His best work is generally regarded as Nostromo, though possibly
his best known is Lord Jim. Collecting his first editions is probably
beyond the means of the average collector, the early titles do sell for
considerable sums, they are also rare which makes the possibility of putting
together a full set a somewhat unrealistic ambition for all those without a
great commitment and a considerable budget. For those operating on a more modest
budget there are plenty of later editions available, many with attractive
bindings which would make a fine substitute.
