John Masefield was born in England on 1st June 1878, he lost his
parents at a young age and an Aunt became his guardian. He tried life at sea but
soon realised it was not for him. In 1895 he arrived in America and became an
itinerant worker living frequently as a vagrant. Two years later he returned to
England determined to become a writer. He became well known for both his novels
and his poetry indeed he became Britian's Poet Laureate He passed away in 1967
and a memorial service was held in Westminster Abbey with Robert Graves reading
the eulogy.
