John Fowles, born 1926, is known chiefly for his first novel. He
is highly regarded as a modernist in literary terms. His fiction is very
competently written, and in our opinion high quality. The critical jury still
seems to be out though. His quality is undeniable the question is, is he a
classic author? The books, are of course, collectable.
The trade issues cannot be described as rare books but The Collector is
certainly not common. Collectors should be aware of the issue point on the
jacket and also the trial binding with the blackish boards and unstained top
edge, much more valuable the the standard first, rusty coloured boards and
stained top edge.
