John Buchan was born in Perth England in 1875 and unlike many
novelists was no armchair theorist with much of the background to his novels
coming form personal experience, his best known character Richard Hannay remains
one of the greatest adventure characters ever created. He spent his formative
years in Scotland before winning a scholarship to Brasenose College Oxford where
he met with great academic success. He left Oxford to work as a journalist
before accepting a post as an administrator to the Boer Republics of Transvaal.
Whilst living a very active life he did suffer with his health throughout his
life, indeed he was considered unfit to serve in the Great War though he did go
to the front as a reporter. After the war he settled in Oxford with some twenty
books under his belt. His best known work, is of course, The Thirty Nine Steps
which was a huge commercial success as well as being the basis of 3 feature
films. Buchan passed away in Canada in 1940 and his ashes were returned to
England.
