More Information
John Gerard Braine was born 13 April 1922 in Bradford, England.
After leaving school he had a few uninspiring jobs until becoming an assistant
librarian before serving in the Royal Navy during the war. In 1951 he took the
step of leaving his job to become a full time freelance writer. He tried short
stories with no success, turning his hand to articles for magazines and
periodicals. Illness forced him to abandon his writing for the security of the
library service once again. During a period of convalescence he began to write
his first, and best known, novel Room at the Top. It met with both critical
acclaim and commercial success, entering the best seller charts and quickly
running into reprint. He returned to full time writing and moved to London. He
struggled to produce anything to match his first book but that does not detract
from his other work. He died on 28 October 1986.
