J Meade Falkner was born on 8th May 1858 in Wiltshire,
England, the son of a poor curate. He had a good education though, Marlborough
School and later Oxford University were he studied history. On leaving he took a
position as a personal tutor to a wealthy family, he subsequently rose through
the ranks of the family's business eventually becoming company chairman. His
devotion and loyalty to business is regarded by many as a potentially great
literary loss. The Lost Stradivarius and , his best known book,
Moonfleet more than hint at his potential. He retired in 1921 in order to
devout his time to the study of church history and passed away in 1932
