Isabella Bird was a one of the most remarkable women adventurers
and travel writes of Victorian times, travelling widely around remote parts of
America and Asia. She was born 16th October 1831 in Yorkshire England. Her
father was the local clergyman and one doctors advice she would accompany him on
his rounds. The need was for fresh air and exercise as Isabella Bird was a
sickly child, indeed at eighteen she underwent an operation to remove a tumour
from her spine, whilst successful her condition worsened later. The best
informed medical opinion for a cure at the time was a long sea voyage! she was
duly despatched with £100 then resultant experience was translated into her
first book. Subsequently she travelled the world and continued to do so even in
her seventieth year. She died in Edinburgh in 1904 amidst plans for a trip to
China.
