Iris Murdoch was born in Dublin in 1919, educated in Bristol before going to Somerville College Oxford. After leaving she worked for the government and the United Nations before becoming a lecturer in Philosophy at Oxford. Her work met with both critical and commercial success culminating in her winning the Booker Prize for The Sea The Sea. Her later titles are relatively easy for the collector to find though earlier ones are rare and remain elusive in collectible condition
