More Information
George Meredith was born in Portsmouth England on 12th February 1828 and after being schooled in England and Germany  was articled to a London solicitor, a career he soon abandoned in favour of writing. He scraped a living initially writing poems and articles for periodicals and after a disastrous marriage began writing for a small newspaper out of financial necessity. He did continue his creative writing though his work met with little commercial success until the publication of The Egoist which brought him finally the critical acclaim he deserved. He passed away in 1909 never having realised the success and fame of some of his contemporaries something of an injustice as those familiar with his work will realise.
