Florence Upton was born in New York on 22nd February 1873 and her
most famous creation was hugely popular, and indeed, influential. Today they
are, of course, seen as politically incorrect and have all but disappeared from
libraries and bookshops etc. They do remain a firm favourite with collectors
though, early books and ephemera in nice condition do fetch considerable sums
today. She also became an accomplished artist and was growing in both renown and
talent before she died in 1922 aged only 49 years old.
