More Information
Ernest Hemingway, born in Illinois 21 July 1899, was one of the most charismatic literary figures of the 20th century. He had a quiet childhood and after graduation went to work as a junior reporter. When the United States joined the war in 1917 he was yearning for action be could not join up because of his eyesight. He volunteered for the red cross instead, even here he saw action by saving victims of a bomb attack despite severe personal injuries. He was decorated for bravery by both the US and Italian governments. On returning to America he married, despite his financial situation working as a reporter, and concentrated his efforts on writing. His career eventually took off with a succession of fine novels and adventures, a great part of the Hemingway myth is that his personal life was every bit as colourful and adventurous as the characters in his books. He won the Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea and was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. A lifetime of heavy drinking was taking its toll and failing health began to dog him, something he found impossible to cope with. On 2nd July 1961 Hemingway, just as his father had done forty-three years previously, shot himself.
