Erich Maria Remarque was born is Germany on 22nd June 1898 and is
best known for his classic wartime tale All Quiet on the Western Front. It was
published first in Germany where it soon sold over a million copies. It went on
to become a best seller around the world and was reprinted many times, indeed
remains in print today. Such was the power of this novel that it was an
impossible act to follow, leaving much of his other fine work in its shadow. He
passed away in Switzerland in 1970.
