Erich Kastner was born in Dresden in 1899. He worked to support
himself through his education and went into journalism on leaving university.
Controversial from the outset he was soon looking once again for work and
survived by writing freelance articles. The came Emil which was an immediate
success and was translated into over 30 languages. It was also the only one of
his books not banned by the German government in 1933. Much of his other work
has been met with either controversy, criticism or disinterest, many problems
stemming from his decision to stay in Germany during the Second World War. The
author passed away in 1974 aged 75
