Elizabeth Gaskell
was born in 1810 and died in 1865. She wrote at a time when women's writing came
into it's own, alongside the Bronte sisters, Elizabeth Browning and George
Eliot. Her finest novel, regarded as a masterpiece, is Cranford,
published in 1853. Whilst this novel is still highly regarded today she is
perhaps best remembered for the seminal work The Life of Charlotte Bronte,
regarded as the standard work on the subject
