Dorothy Parker was born on 22 August 1893 in New Jersey, USA. She came from a prosperous family and after leaving school pursued a literary career, eventually being published in Vanity Fair for which she was paid $12. She continued with considerable success at the magazine until until 1919 when she was fired due to complaints and 'troublesome behaviour'.
