Dashiell Hammett was born in 1894 in Maryland USA and had a
string of minor jobs before working for Pinkerton's. This provided him with
plenty of source material for his initial attempts at writing. His first works
were short stories and serialisations for pulp magazines, most notably Black
Mask. Although he only published 5 novel he wrote literally hundreds of stories.
The novels have become legendary not only in the Crime Fiction genre but also
American literature. His hard boiled character Sam Spade creating a template
still copied by authors today. The character was immortalised by Humphrey Bogart
in the film adaptation. The author had a life long habit of heavy smoking and
hard drinking which constantly took its toil leading ultimately to his
