More Information
Clarence Edward Mulford was born in Illinois on 3rd February 1883
and educated in New York. He forwent college and went straight into work, his
first literary effort was a competition entry which netted him a $100 second
prize (10 times his weekly salary at the time). By this time he had already
written his first Bar 20 story featuring Hopalong Cassidy. The character was a
huge commercial success not only in publishing but also with a series of films,
portrayed by William Boyd. The author was never happy with the films though they
did provide well for him financially. He passed away in 1956 and remains the
most successful western writer ever.
