More Information
Christopher Isherwood, born 1904 in Cheshire, England came from a distinguished and comfortable background. Sent away to boarding school following the death of his father he made friends with Auden before going to Cambridge University on a history scholarship. On leaving he worked as a tutor whilst dabbling with writing. After several rejections his firs novel was published but, initially, sold poorly on 300 copies with the rest being remaindered. It was when he moved to Berlin that his best known work was published, the Berlin series was a great success, also the inspiration for the film and musical Cabaret. Isherwood led the classic life of the 1930's author, travelling and living a bohemian lifestyle. Collectors can find the later titles with relative ease though his early work in dust jackets are rare and highly sought after.
