Allan Mallinson actually served as a soldier and his first books
was a history of the Light Dragoons. He really came to prominence with his
second book, a novel which introduced the series character Matthew Hervey. The
first book was probably a success with hyper-modern collectors/speculators
before it was with the reading public. Initially prices were volatile but have
settled down and, at the time of writing, have held their ground. The series
seems to have gone from strength to strength with the later editions seeing much
larger first edition print runs. The consequence of this is that they tend to be
relatively common so should be available relatively cheaply. Signed copies are
not particularly rare and should always been sought out whenever availability
and budget allows. Alan.
