More Information
Alistair Maclean was born in 1922 in Glasgow, Scotland but spent
his formative years in a remote Scottish village near Loch Ness. At the age of
nineteen he enlisted in the Royal Navy. After the war he returned to university
in Glasgow where he graduated with honours and went on to become a teacher. In
1954 the need for money prompted Maclean to enter a short story competition,
£100 first prize which he won from nearly 1,000 entries. This brought the author
to the attention of Collins who suggested he try a novel. The result became the
most successful, at the time, first novel ever published. The success continued
and he became one of the worlds most popular thriller writers gaining greater
exposure as several of the books were turned into successful films. He is still
keenly collected today and part of the appeal is due to large print runs it is
possible to put a full set of first editions together without selling the house.
