Charles C Swinburne was born on 5 April 1837 and was
simultaneously one of the best and most shocking poets of his generation. He was
educated at Eton where he began writing at the age of twelve, he later went to
Balliol College Oxford where he met, amongst others, William Blake. He wrote
extensively and courted controversy later drifting into melancholy and
alcoholism. He died in 1909 and for many years his reputation declined, though
now, quite properly, his reputation is restored.
